Trade with China
After reading the article "Senate approves trade bill with China.
Please make a 300 word post to the following question.
1. What are the terms of the China trade bill? What groups oppose the passage of this bill? What has China agreed to do in exchange for the benefits of the bill? How does U.S. President Bill Clinton feel about the bill? What other groups are in favor of this legislation? What is PNTR? Define the provisions that PNTR status would place on China.

Refined Lesson plan
1) Subject, grade level, and lesson topic.
I am thinking about doing a lesson on the Executive Branch of the United State Government. The goal for students will be to understand the structure and functions of the government created by the U.S. Constitution. This activity falls within the Government and Civics section of social studies and it is a ninth grade lesson. Students will also implement technology by creating an audio recording using audacity that will focus on the students reading English words and translating them into Chinese using the newly found website.
2) Learning goals for the lesson
The learner will be able to describe the president's role in a foreign policy decision concerning China. The learner will be able to sequence the steps leading to normal diplomatic relations between the United States and China. The learner will be able to describe some of the economic effects of our relationship with China.
§ Students will select some Chinese words and will create an audio recording of their voices using Audacity and a USD microphone.
§ Students will edit their audio using Audacity.
§ Students will post their audio books into a collaboration-type site, such as a blog or wiki.
§ Students will learn how to post to a blogs and wiki.
3) Technology that you are going to use and rationale.
Students will visit the PBS online feature entitled "Nixon's China Game." They will review events on a time line, and read about the role of Ping-Pong diplomacy and Richard Nixon. After answering several questions about the material, they will be asked to think about the effects of our relationship with China on our economy. They will construct a chart showing American businesses in China and Chinese products in America. To further reinforce the classroom instruction students will participate in online activities before, during, and after class. Students will visit web pages, see videos, take online quizzes, complete e-puzzles and games, use e- flashcards, use interactive graphic organizers, post blogs, and wikis.
Students might not understand the diplomatic role of the president.
Students might understand that China and the U.S. were not always friends.
5) A scenario of how students use the technology in the lesson
After the lesson students will visit the PBS online feature about Nixon’s China Game and will complete a web activity that will consist of them answering comprehension questions from the readings and video. There will be a total of 10 comprehension question that students will need to answer and provide written responses to them. Students will be able to revisit the article and the websites as many times as they need to in order to find the answers. After completing the assignment students will copy answers and questions from the website and post them into a classroom blog that I will create and maintain. Students will also have to response to each other’s posts. I will also create a wiki were students can post Chinese products that are used in this country, and products that American export to China. The wiki will be simple in nature but students can develop it as the class progresses and their skills increase. My goal will be to have videos, photos, and games integrated into the wiki. Students will also have to use audacity and make an audio recording of themselves.
6) A. Students read the unit chapter. In this chapter students studied the seven roles of the president. One of these roles is that of Chief Diplomat. For thirty years the United States maintained no diplomatic ties with the most heavily populated country in the world—China. When Communists led by Mao Zedong successfully ousted the nationalist government, the United States broke off all diplomatic relations. President Richard Nixon was determined to visit China and resume normal diplomatic ties. Consider the effects of Nixon's foreign policy decision. What American companies trade with China today? How many Americans buy products that were made in China? What is our relationship with China today?
B. Students see a video on Nixon visit to China and write their personal reflection on the video
C. Students will visit the PBS online feature entitled "Nixon's China Game." They will review events on a time line, and read about the role of Ping-Pong diplomacy and Richard Nixon.
D. Students will be asked to think about the effects of our relationship with China on our economy. They will construct a chart showing American businesses in China and Chinese products in America via a wiki. Students can get information on the webpage with the Chinese and American products.
E. Students will learn some Chines words and will create an audio recording using audacity.
F. Assessment using multiple choice quizzes and test as well as comprehension questions.
7) How student learning will be assessed
The assessment will be done in class through class discussions, web writing, editing, and saving of work. Student will take in class tests and quizzes. Students will also be required to take in class notes in their notebooks or laptops. Information from this lesson will be on a Mid Term so students will have to save their test and quizzes for the mid-term or they can visit the class wiki and blogs to get information. I am still thinking about using a wiki to create a Venn diagram or a T-chart where students can record their response on Chinese and American products. The assignment will also have self-monitoring assessments. These assessments are provided on-line and its intention is to provide students with a way to assess their knowledge as the class progresses through the lesson. There will be web writing through the blog and wiki sections. Students must be able to post, edit, and save their work. A student must successfully response to the activities or lesson via internet. These will ensure that students comprehend the lessons and activities. The point of the comprehension questions is to have students find their answer to the questions requiring them to read the text and see the videos. After each blog or wiki students must successfully post and keep communication with their classmate via the web.

Podcasts in the Classroom
Audio Books
http://coolpodcasts.wordpress.com/category/children-podcast/
Podcasts are an important part of technology integration. Podcasts provide technological resources to teachers and students. Some of the applications that podcasts offer teachers is the ability to create lectures and lessons that can be put on-line for students use. Students that are absent can have the opportunity to listen to the lectures that they missed in class. Another benefit of podcasts is that they can be forwarded or rewind to a certain point in the lecture that the students found interesting or needed to listen to clarify a question that they needed an answer to. Podcasts are a great way to reinforce difficult concepts by providing that extra class instruction in a private setting where the students has the ability to control the pace of the lesson. My favorite part of podcast is the ability to create audio books and using them during reading time.
As a 3rd grade teacher I love using audio books as a part of my class activities and in the past I used listening centers to build language, fluency, reading intonation as well as comprehension. Students love to hear others read and students learn through listening. One big part of mastering the English language is passing a listening portion of an English language assessment that schools provide second language learners. While visiting the podcast websites I came across hundreds of podcast that featured well known stories. I love hearing the stories and I am sure that my students will enjoy listening to them too. Podcasts provide students the opportunities to become active listeners and readers. I am sure that I am going to use the podcasts to get the 6 grade students to record stories that the younger students can listen to. I am going to use the Podcast to teach students how to record, edited and import and export music into stories. I am going to take what I learned in class and use it to develop on-line audio books. If I can get the principals permission I might get them put on the schools website and have them as educational resources.

Podcast Reflection
The benefits of having podcast in school outweigh the disadvantages of not having them at all. Podcast can be a great benefit to all students but especially to second language learners because podcasts can assist them in the language acquisition. When student are learning a new language reading and writing is most difficult skill to master for a second language learner podcast can provide that one on one instruction because student can use the podcast to listen to a class lecture that they did not understand, or they can use the podcast to record themselves reading or listen to others read. Listening comes naturally to everyone and podcast are a listening tool.
Student are always listening to some type of media such as internet audio streaming, audio and compact discs (CDs). Podcast is the least know media tool and probably the most beneficial to learning. I had never heard of a podcast until I took this class. I am at an elementary school and podcasts are none existent at my school. I tried logging into the website that contained the podcasts from class but the website was blocked by the school’s internet filters. It is a waste of money to have such a great tool blocked from education. The thing that I like about podcast is that they are online and available from anywhere. I can download them as they are needed.
The benefit of working with podcast is that they can be created by anyone. Teacher created podcast usually contain lessons, lectures, or assignments. Teachers use podcast as a way to deliver instruction. There is concern that students will not show up to class if a podcast is available on line for them but there is no research to support this theory. College students as me might need that extra clarification on a lecture and podcast provides it without having to contact the instructor. Students can also create podcast for class assignments. They can create projects on class activities such as reading, summarizing, and tips on improve their performance in class. Overall, podcasts a great technology tool for teacher, and students to use in the classroom.

TPACK Framework

Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK)
Technological Pedagogical Knowledge (TPK)
Technological Content Knowledge (TCK)
Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK)
Technology Knowledge (TK)
Pedagogical Knowledge (PK)
Content Knowledge (CK)
1. The areas that I need to improve in the TPACK model in trying to integrate the technology part alongside all the other parts and fit it into my daily instruction. While planning with my colleagues it is easy to implement the technology but it is hard to align it into the content standards. Last year, I implement lots of technology into my lessons but this was done as the lesson called for technology. While in class I used many video clips from the discovery channel. They brought the concept that I was trying to teach home to the students. As I monitored student’s reactions they seemed to focus more on what I was teaching. For example I read the assignment articles but the TPACK video brought everything together and this is what I did last year. On some occasions while the principal was visiting my classroom I was checked to see if it was aligned to the content standards. I thought that the principal would find the technological aspect of my instruction great but instead it was scrutinized to see if I was following the standards and if it was aligned to the benchmarks I used PowerPoint, word document instead of the chalkboard, the class visited websites, but the principal for some reason tried to find error in what I was doing. This year I am trying to find the right activity to use to maximize students learning and like the TPACK model require the alignment of all the different areas such as the PK, PCK, CK, and TK my greatest change will be to implement the technological knowledge into my instruction.
2. I am currently teaching third grade but I am certified to teach high school my goal is to transfer to the high school and teach History. I am thinking about doing a unit on 9th grade government. While I was reviewing the 9th grade government textbook that the district uses in the classroom I discovered that it had a lot of online activities available for students. Many of the activities require that students to take online quizzes at the end of each unit and chapter. Students can assess their knowledge and understanding as they complete the work. The lessons also require students to visit websites. After visiting the website the students have to complete an activity. I liked the activity that sequenced the steps on how to become a U.S. citizen. Student can use a variety to technologies to complete this task. Maybe after visiting the Naturalization website students can create a wiki and outline the steps that someone has to complete in order to become a U.S. citizen. Video uplink can be used in the wiki, and students can create a brochure or some type of document that will allow others to use. Some of the tools that students can use to complete the activities will be visiting websites, taking online quizzes, make graphs or charts, blogs, timelines, word processor, and wikis.

Using a Wiki in the 3rd Grade Classroom
EAT ME WIKI http://eatme.wikispaces.com/Apples
Wiki can serve a purpose in my classroom. After visiting the wiki on Eat Me I checked to see if it is a protected site or if it is a reciprocating wiki and it is reciprocating wiki or in other words my students will be able to edit and save on it. My idea is to have my third grade students visit the Eat Me wiki and read the students entries and see what other students thought about the apples. Then the students will go to their desk and write their thoughts on apples. Did they like them or not? While all of this is going on I will have another group reading the Eat Me wiki. It is kind of like a Round Robin reading group. Once the last group is done reading the entries then the first group returns to the computers and writes their final responses to the Wiki and saves them. I don’t think that my school allows YouTube videos download so I need to check and see what is available to me, but I am sure that there are other websites that allow educational video downloads. My goal will be to update the Eat Me wiki. The Eat Me wiki is missing vegetable photos, and other foods and videos. What I liked about the wiki is that it is simple and needs a lot of work. My students will find it easy to use and they will definitely see the progress as it is happening. Before the activity starts I will need to explain what a wiki is, how it is used, and how they can edit and save to it. To do this I will show them the videos on wiki, the same ones that we saw in class plus I will add one on how to use the wedges. Finally, I will model how to make an entry and how to post it and save it. I will not be grading the students for this activity because it is going to be hard enough for them to understand the purpose of the wiki but once they understand that is accessible to everyone is the World and that anyone can edit and save to it they will be impressed.

If you can't post your comments on a blog
If you can't post comments you might want to read this.
I can look at blogs, be a follower, but when I try to post a comment it says I can't w/this account. sing out & back in.
Short description of problem:
Then it trys to get me to get a blog. I don't need a blog. I just want to comment on friends Cricut art.
If you are experiencing problems posting comments on blogs that use an embedded comment form, you have a problem with authentication, and with cookie filtering.
First, make sure that your browser is up to date.
Next, try a different login procedure.
1. Login to Blogger using "www.blogger.com".
2. Do not check "Remember me".
If that does not help, try a second time..
1. Clear cache, cookies, and sessions (not just cache or cookies) - then restart the browser.
2. Login to Blogger using "www.blogger.com".
3. Do not check "Remember me".
Alternatively, stop filtering "third party cookies", in your browser and on your computer. That's the best solution, overall - but you may have to search for the cookie filter(s) that affect your use of Blogger / Google.
You can have a cookie filter:
1. In a native browser feature.
2. In a browser add-on.
3. In a security feature, on the computer.
4. In a network device.
Please, note that any and all cookie filters must be set properly. If you have more than one cookie filter affecting access to Blogger, all filters must be set properly, before an improvement will be seen.
Try the commenting / cookie test, by commenting on 2 of my blogs, if you like.

Educational Blogs Week 3
After reading the articles on blogging in education I am convinced that the blogs applications is endless in the classroom. Blogs can be used across the entire curriculum. For example, I teach a third grade class. I am currently working on an extended unit on Communities. Students can use the World Wide Web to visit websites that have information about their surrounding communities that they live in. There is information about El Paso’s climate, landforms and communities. Students could learn about the Franklin Mountains, and its vegetation, and animals. Students can then use that information to post short blogs about what they learned. After that students can take time to read what other students said about their blogs. I currently have a lab top that is set up with a projector. I can easily put the blogs on the overhead and do a shared reading with the class and maybe have some student read from them too. This can teach the students that blogs involve reading and writing. It is digital reading and writing but never the less it is the same but just done online. Students can also take digital pictures of their community either through cell phones or digital cameras and upload them at home or at school. Parents can help their children upload the information into the blog page. This activity seems to interest children because they are interested in learning about their community. The simple facts that the El Paso and New Mexico area has two mountain ranges crossing through two states is interesting for kids while the Rio Grande valley makes it even more interesting because we live in a desert that has a source of water that is used from irrigation and recreation. Students can add their stories to the blog about the day they visited the mountains or the Rio Grande. For example, writing an entry about their visit to the mountains or the river with a story photo would be great. I need to find out how I can access a blog on the schools computer. I will need to speak to the IT specialist and try to gain a special permission to have a class blog. Blogging will have an impact on the depth of knowledge that students will gain from using it because it teaches the critical thinking skills in reading, writing and technology. In the past I have used the email to communicate with parents but blogging has added another tool for parent contact.

iGeneration
The article Teaching the iGeneration really hit home. Technology is taking over many aspects of kids lives and as an adult it is hard to accept and understand how technology has take over the world. The World Wide Web is changing the way that children learning. A student with a smartphone call download any answer to any question before the teacher reaches the board or his/her computer. iGeneration children multi tasks and they do this while emailing, texting, and downloading their favorite music. For the iGeneration the information is a click or a stroke away. The aricle mentioned that small children know more about technology then their parents. Adults are very cautious when dealing with technology but children accept it and see it as their own and limitless in everyday applications. I grew up in the Generation X and I use email, cellphones, labtops, computers and download some music, but my children download music, movies, facebook, twitter, and watch movies online and do who knows what other things online. There are many useful educational applications for technology.

Web 2.0 Classroom
What does a Web 2.0 Classroom look like?
A web 2.0 classroom should be centered on every day technological gadgets and tools that are available to students such as cell phones, lap tops, iPods, as well as other tools. A web 2.0 classroom should have access to the internet without restrictions, because filters restrict student’s access to information that facilitates the learning process. The Web 2.0 classroom should look like a super highway that links students, parents, and teachers together. A web 2.0 classroom uses technology as its core for instruction. Why should students and school restrict themselves to information? We are no longer dependent on textbooks or even teachers. With the internet all students need is a facilitator guiding them through the curriculum and their learning process.
The internet is revolutionizing the curriculum and the ways that teaching is implemented in the classroom. In a Web 2.O classroom the professor has the ability to check homework, add, delete, or modify assignments. In a dynamic class environment the students and parents have easy access to the assignments and grades. Parents have emails that link them to what is happening at school and in the classroom. Everyone has access to the information and sharing information is common in a Web 2.0 class. Sharing helps the student develop partnerships with fellow classmates and led to cooperative groups.
Creating a technological rich constructivist classroom is easy. Simply allowing students to use the technological gadgets and tools in the classroom is one way. Most students have cell phones. Cell phones come with internet access, email, texting, and video and cameras. As a teacher I can use these gadgets to provide assignments and communicate with the students; image that some of the world’s greatest leaders have been toppled by persons with cell phones. I am sure that I can find a way to use it in the classroom. Sharing information is common to everyone. Everyone has shared a photo to a song with someone else and still sharing has evolved to the more complex sharing of files, data, and programs files. By breaking down the barrier that educational institutes have imposed to protect the student’s privacy and rights have restricted the learning process. Learning has taken a new direction that is yet to be charted and defined. A technological rich environment is students using technology throughout the day. Before the day began the teacher in the article read the news, updates information, emailed students, check weblogs and shared information with students and colleagues. The information was readily accessible to everyone and to me this is how a technological classroom is created and sustained.
