Using a Wiki in the 3rd Grade Classroom

EAT ME WIKI http://eatme.wikispaces.com/Apples

Wiki can serve a purpose in my classroom. After visiting the wiki on Eat Me I checked to see if it is a protected site or if it is a reciprocating wiki and it is reciprocating wiki or in other words my students will be able to edit and save on it. My idea is to have my third grade students visit the Eat Me wiki and read the students entries and see what other students thought about the apples. Then the students will go to their desk and write their thoughts on apples. Did they like them or not? While all of this is going on I will have another group reading the Eat Me wiki. It is kind of like a Round Robin reading group. Once the last group is done reading the entries then the first group returns to the computers and writes their final responses to the Wiki and saves them. I don’t think that my school allows YouTube videos download so I need to check and see what is available to me, but I am sure that there are other websites that allow educational video downloads. My goal will be to update the Eat Me wiki. The Eat Me wiki is missing vegetable photos, and other foods and videos. What I liked about the wiki is that it is simple and needs a lot of work. My students will find it easy to use and they will definitely see the progress as it is happening. Before the activity starts I will need to explain what a wiki is, how it is used, and how they can edit and save to it. To do this I will show them the videos on wiki, the same ones that we saw in class plus I will add one on how to use the wedges. Finally, I will model how to make an entry and how to post it and save it. I will not be grading the students for this activity because it is going to be hard enough for them to understand the purpose of the wiki but once they understand that is accessible to everyone is the World and that anyone can edit and save to it they will be impressed.

Educational blogs

I subscribed to the following educational blogs.

If you can't post your comments on a blog

If you can't post comments you might want to read this.

I can look at blogs, be a follower, but when I try to post a comment it says I can't w/this account. sing out & back in.

Short description of problem:
Then it trys to get me to get a blog. I don't need a blog. I just want to comment on friends Cricut art.

If you are experiencing problems posting comments on blogs that use an embedded comment form, you have a problem with authentication, and with cookie filtering.

First, make sure that your browser is up to date.

Next, try a different login procedure.

1. Login to Blogger using "www.blogger.com".

2. Do not check "Remember me".

If that does not help, try a second time..

1. Clear cache, cookies, and sessions (not just cache or cookies) - then restart the browser.

2. Login to Blogger using "www.blogger.com".

3. Do not check "Remember me".

Alternatively, stop filtering "third party cookies", in your browser and on your computer. That's the best solution, overall - but you may have to search for the cookie filter(s) that affect your use of Blogger / Google.

You can have a cookie filter:
1. In a native browser feature.
2. In a browser add-on.
3. In a security feature, on the computer.
4. In a network device.
Please, note that any and all cookie filters must be set properly. If you have more than one cookie filter affecting access to Blogger, all filters must be set properly, before an improvement will be seen.

Try the commenting / cookie test, by commenting on 2 of my blogs, if you like.

Educational Blogs Week 3

After reading the articles on blogging in education I am convinced that the blogs applications is endless in the classroom. Blogs can be used across the entire curriculum.  For example, I teach a third grade class. I am currently working on an extended unit on Communities. Students can use the World Wide Web to visit websites that have information about their surrounding communities that they live in. There is information about El Paso’s climate, landforms and communities. Students could learn about the Franklin Mountains, and its vegetation, and animals. Students can then use that information to post short blogs about what they learned. After that students can take time to read what other students said about their blogs. I currently have a lab top that is set up with a projector. I can easily put the blogs on the overhead and do a shared reading with the class and maybe have some student read from them too. This can teach the students that blogs involve reading and writing. It is digital reading and writing but never the less it is the same but just done online. Students can also take digital pictures of their community either through cell phones or digital cameras and upload them at home or at school.  Parents can help their children upload the information into the blog page. This activity seems to interest children because they are interested in learning about their community. The simple facts that the El Paso and New Mexico area has two mountain ranges crossing through two states is interesting for kids while the Rio Grande valley makes it even more interesting because we live in a desert that has a source of water that is used from irrigation and  recreation.  Students can add their stories to the blog about the day they visited the mountains or the Rio Grande. For example, writing an entry about their visit to the mountains or the river with a story photo would be great. I need to find out how I can access a blog on the schools computer. I will need to speak to the IT specialist and try to gain a special permission to have a class blog. Blogging will have an impact on the depth of knowledge that students will gain from using it because it teaches the critical thinking skills in reading, writing and technology. In the past I have used the email to communicate with parents but blogging has added another tool for parent contact.

iGeneration

The article Teaching the iGeneration really hit home. Technology is taking over many aspects of kids lives and as an adult it is hard to accept and understand how technology has take over the world. The World Wide Web is changing the way that children learning. A student with a smartphone call download any answer to any question before the teacher reaches the board or his/her computer. iGeneration children multi tasks and they do this while emailing, texting, and downloading their favorite music.  For the iGeneration the information is a click or a stroke away. The aricle mentioned that small children know more about technology then their parents. Adults are very cautious when dealing with technology but children accept it and see it as their own and limitless in everyday applications. I grew up in the Generation X and I use email, cellphones, labtops, computers and download some music, but my children download music, movies, facebook, twitter, and watch movies online and do who knows what other things online. There are many useful educational applications for technology.
